Ford picks well-connected tycoon as representative in Myanmar

Capital Automotive Ltd., a unit of tycoon Ko Ko Gyi’s growing empire, has been chosen as the representative for Ford Motor Company in Myanmar and it will open the first Ford showroom here at Yangon in April, its director Khin Tun said.

“We are preparing to open a showroom at the end of April,” Khin Tun said. The first Ford Motor Showroom and Services Center will be located in Hlaing Township, he said.
Capital Automotive is a unit of Capital Development Group, a sister company of Diamond Star Company. Their parent company Capital Diamond Star Group is also the sole distributor of Pepsi Company in Myanmar.

Led by tycoon Ko Ko Gyi, the group focuses on trading and manufacturing. It is one of the largest trading companies in Myanmar. Capital Diamond Star Group is also involved in property development, including shopping centers. Its brands include Diamond Star wheat powder, Armo fertiliser, Capital Hypermarket and Premier Coffee.

The group is moving quickly into construction of city infrastructure and is the contractor for the Shwe Gone Tine flyover, which it began last December.

Ko Ko Gyi is a member in National Economic and Social Advisory Council, a panel that was launched last June and is comprised of advisors from academia and business.

Ford is the world’s eighth largest automaker with sales of more than 5.5 million vehicles last year. The Michigan-based company was founded by Henry Ford in 1903.
