Thai prawns, sugar and spice slipping through border, official says

Despite import bans on sugar, dried chili, eggs, chicken and prawns they are still entering the country illegally from Thailand at the Myawady border trade point, an official at the site said.

The Border Trade Department began issuing Individual Trading Cards (ITC) to merchants at the border town on December 1 to curb illegal border trade and protect consumers.

Import of some farm produce has been banned to protect the country’s farming households, who comprise about 75 percent of the population. The border official, who asked not to be named, said the illegal import of these products was also harming local merchants who restricted themselves to legal trade.

Raising national awareness is necessary to successfully curb illegal trade, the official said.

Thailand has banned the import of sugar, rice and rubber, while China has banned the import of sugar and salt from Myanmar, the official said.

Merchants can import canned food that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
