Cross-border trading—which accounts for 85% of Burma-Thailand total
bilateral trade—increased by 25% last year, according to an official
from the Burmese Ministry of Commerce.
“In 2011, Thai-Myanmar bilateral trade stood at US $6.1 billion,” he said. “Some 85% of that is cross-border trade.”
He reaffirmed that the two countries intend to triple bilateral trade by 2015.
According
to records from Burma’s Department of Border Trade, in the fiscal year
2011-12, bilateral trade at the Tachilek border reached nearly $46
million; Myawaddy $24.5 million; Kawthaung $122 million; and Myeik
border trade was $135 million.
