Myanmar's parliament begins 6th session in Nay Pyi Taw

Myanmar's parliament began its 6th sessions in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday, more than one month after the end of the 5th session of the two houses.

In his opening address to the Lower House session, attended by 397 MPs out of 429, Speaker of the House of Representatives USwe Mann called for joint efforts in implementing the rule of law and peace.

He tasked the parliament members with responsibility to help settle difficulties and challenges the country is faced with.


The session will discuss important national projects and budget for 2013-14 fiscal year and approve a tax bill among others, he said.

The two houses' sessions will be followed by the union parliament session on Thursday.

During the last 5th parliament session which lasted from October 18, to November 22, 2012, the parliament abrogated three laws and enacted a new foreign investment law.

Measures on the settlement of debt from Asian Development Bank (ADB), World Bank (WB) and Paris Club member countries, the government's proposed signing of nuclear non-proliferation treaty with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and proposed establishment of diplomatic relations with Iceland were also approved at the session.
