Myanmar govt to work with parliament in reform: president

Myanmar President U Thein Sein has sent a new year message to the ongoing session of the parliament in Nay Pyi Taw, saying that his government will work in consultation with the parliament regularly in undertaking political, economic and social reforms.

In his message published Friday, U Thein Sein voiced recognition of the important role played by the parliament in the process.

While going through democratic transition, he said Myanmar has tried to improve relations with the international community which has greatly helped the reform process.

He cited another major achievement in domestic peace process gained in 2012 as saying that ceasefire agreements were reached with 10 ethnic armed groups out of 11, calling for proceeding from ceasefire agreements to political dialogue to resolve ethnic conflicts in the country and adding that the government is currently working on the formation of a framework for such dialogue.

He reiterated that the door is always open for the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) to discuss ceasefire terms and to have meaningful dialogue with the government.

Alongside the political reform, he also cited several economic and financial reforms made during the year, while economic sanctions were respectively lifted by Australia, the European Union and the United States to some extent, prompting American businessmen to step in Myanmar.
