Myawady border trade zone near Myanmar-Thailand border was reopened on Dec 5, 2011 after it temporarily closed for 17 months.
Trade between Myanmar and Thailand in
December 2011 was about US$2 million, but the total trade amount between
the two countries as of Dec 18, 2012 was at US$22 million. Sources
accounted the increase to legalised businesses.
Although thousands of trucks and
pick-ups travelled along the Myawady-Dawna trade route near
Myanmar-Thailand border daily in the past, now only licensed vehicles
are allowed.
Importing fuel has also increased in addition to consumer goods from the border of Myawady.
Fuel imported from the Myawady border
amounted to over 90,000 liters in April, over one million liters in
October and over 26 million liters in December with local requirement,
according to Myawady border trade center.
Ethnic groups that made peace with the government formed companies and imported fuel legally.
