Golden Myanmar takes off

YANGON, 18 January 2013: A new low-cost carrier Golden Myanmar Airlines commenced its first scheduled service yesterday on the Yangon-Mandalay route.

The airline flew the Yangon-Mandalay-Yangon route first on 11 January to comply with conditions to obtain a final air operators’ certificate (AOC).

It is currently operating a daily flight between the two cities using an Airbus A320.

According to  a  report in Myanmar Times, the airline’s chairman, U Khin Maung Aye said another Boeing aircraft was due to arrive in February. The airline also plans to begin regional flights from Yangon to Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand as early as March to compete head on with Myanmar Airways International. No details were given.

“The situation has changed – tourist arrivals are increasing sharply this year – so we are interested in this business,” he said. “We are not looking to make much profit and primarily want to offer the public flights at a cheap price.”

The airline, which is now registered as a public company, was established last August, but started to sell shares to the public this week.

GMA was formed by 15 investors including the chairmen of the Cooperative Bank and Myanmar Golden Star.

The airline has set up a website, www.gmairlines.com which includes a booking engine,  but so far the booking side of the website is not functioning.

Passengers can contact travel agents or the airline at +95 9 400 447 999 or email reservations@gmairlines.com
