IWATA, Shizuoka Pref. — Yamaha Motor Co. is
planning to set up a motorcycle sales unit in Myanmar next year,
President Hiroyuki Yanagi announced.
The company's annual motorbike sales at present
amount to just a few thousand units in Myanmar and are conducted through
local agents, but Yamaha opened a representative office in Yangon this
autumn and is looking to grow its local operations.
Yamaha "will advance to the next stage next
year," Yanagi said in a joint media interview Friday at the firm's
headquarters in Iwata, Shizuoka Prefecture.
Yanagi said there will be no need to build a
plant in Myanmar for the time being, citing factors including the
rapidly emerging country's extremely low tariffs on imported
motorcycles, which can be as little as 5 percent.
