Myanmar urges China for export tax exemption

Myanmar has sought tax exemption for its agro products export as it pursues several trade agreements with China, according to the ministry of commerce.

In September, China granted tax-exempt status to 7,787 commodities from least developed countries including Myanmar.

However, China kept rice and yellow maize from Myanmar out of this tax-exempt items’ list despite Myanmar’s request for their inclusion, a commerce ministry official said.

China’s tax exemption is applicable for marine, wood, manufacturing products and jewelries.

Thein Myint Wai, assistant director of ministry of commerce, said they would work to sign treaties with China for market penetration of Myanmar agricultural products.

Currently, Myanmar is exporting agricultural products, minerals, teak logs, woods, gems and jewelries, and oil and gas to China. The country imports electrical and electronic goods, machinery, clothing, home appliances and medicines from China.

Myanmar has border trade with China, Thailand, Bangladesh and India. Of the countries, China and Thailand are major partners in terms of trade volumes.

Meantime, volume of illegal trades with the two countries is also huge. Illegally exported goods from China and Thailand include edible oil, foodstuff, electronics and home appliances. Timber, jade, minerals and gems and jewelries from Myanmar are imported into the countries illegally.
