Myanmar eyes private partners for generator plants

At least 12 local firms have expressed interest to partner with the Myanmar Electrical Power Enterprise (MEPE) in the production and distribution of electricity, said Khin Maung Zaw, director general of the Electrical Power Department.

The department is under the Ministry of Electrical Power, which plans to privatise and expand the power sector next year.

He said the private firms will not only distribute electricity but make ensure that there is enough energy resources during the lean months of summer.

Aung Khine of the Yangon City Electricity Supply Board noted that Myanmar is the only country that has not privatised its power sector. He said the ministry will work together with companies from China, Japan and Korea to construct three generator plants which can produce about 500 megawatt each.

Aing Khine said the ministry has signed a memorandum of understanding with China’s Hydro Lancha Company and with KV-Korea to construct 550-megawatt natural gas turbines in Hlawkar and Takayta, respectively. The ministry has a separate agreement with a Japanese company for another 500-megawatt gas turbine in Takayta. It is also cooperating with Thailand to construct a 120-megawatt gas turbine in Ahlone.

“We will construct natural gas turbines between 2015 and 2016 that will produce about 1,650 megawatts,” he said.

Myanmar produces 1,542 megawatts but needs about 1,800 megawatts during the summer, sources claimed.

Yangon’s power consumption rate is 738 megawatts but this increases to 850 megawatts in the summer.
