Bus import is still minimal among automobile imports in Myanmar, according to the Customs Department.
Buses imported for public transport
comprise just 1 per cent of the total vehicle imports with the official
statistics showing that just over 1,000 buses were imported among more
than 100,000 imported automobiles up to November 2012.
Exactly, 105,798 personal cars, 6,151 trucks and 1,437 buses have been imported within the 14-month period from September 2011.
Meanwhile, the government gained 280.3
million kyats (US$333.7 million) in tax revenue from car imports in
fiscal year 2012-2013.
For vehicles of necessity in the
country, Myanmar relies mainly on import rather than domestic
manufacturing. Although the import licence of cars were limited to
exclusive parties in the past, the government initiated
exchanging-old-car programmes, allowing those citizens who return their
more than 20-year-old cars to apply for the import licence of a new one.
The government formed an OSS (One Stop
Service) body with a range of departments to emphasize on car import.
The responsible departments for OSS include Directorate of Trade under
Ministry of Commerce, Inland Transport Department, Customs Department,
Foreign Trade Bank and Myanmar Investment and Commercial Bank.
